Advice for judging a neighborhood automobile show?

Previous topic - Adjacent topic

2 friends and I have been asked past some other friend to help gauge entrants in a local car show.  The testify is a fund-raising event for a local charitable organization that my friend only recently took over.   It seems they don't take much in the way of a judging framework for this event.  The three of us being asked to judge are all car enthusiasts but have no experience every bit judges.  So I idea I'd inquire here for any helpful criteria or judging process advice.

The prove will be open to all sorts of cars.  This of course might pose a challenge for having insight well-nigh the specialness or originality of a automobile.  I'm hoping the spirit of the event will be relaxed and fun.

I effigy the post-obit are sound criteria for judging entries:

1) Overall Condition
2) Originality
3) Popular appeal
four) Uniqueness/rarity

Any suggestions or thoughts near fairness and fun for judging would be appreciated.

Thanks.

I 2nd what 49er wrote. You could offering some categories if the event is well attended but I would let the crowd judge and maybe even make a dominion that y'all cannot vote for your own vehicle to prevent a single large family from "stacking the vote" :)

If yous kept it to just your topics the guy in the make new Hell True cat or latest exotic which he/she collection off the dealer lot would win. Perfectly original, perfect status, rare, and every child in the crowd who bench races would know what it was.

One thing you didn't mention which I would consider is the attention to detail somewhat put forth in trying to restore office or all of the car. Yes it'south only original once but the effort it takes to restore something to wait original again is incredible and necessary if you lot own a auto which the aftermarket doesn't support.....

Good luck and have fun just getting the crowd into whatever cars they like. Peradventure you lot could mail some follow-upwards pictures with comments on the variety of cars and the omnipresence. How many cars/ people practise you expect?

Scott

I concord with 49er. Let the participants vote for the car they like. I ran a local show for 20 tears and this is the way we started. Just count the votes after and award pocket-sized trophies. I hope this helps.

Agree with Art as well. Elementary peer judging is the best manner to get in an informal situation like this.

A Cadillac Car is a Possession for which there is no Adequate Substitute

No standards or rules, so how do you judge nether those criteria.

So I concord with the others, pass the buck save yourself the grief. Let the spectators or other entrants vote and so count them up.

I can predict who wins. Someones buddy or daddy'southward inexpensive Ford or Chevrolet that the entrants can relate too. Car quality or collectability have nothing to do with it at these local events. (even sometimes at the society meets for that matter)

Usuallly that leaves my favorites out Cadillac and Oldsmobile. (unless you lot have a 442)

1959 Oldsmobile 98 Holiday Sports Sedan
1964 Oldsmobile 98 Town Sedan (OCA 1st)
1970 GMC C1500
1977 Oldsmobile 98 Regency Coupe
1978 Cadillac Coupe Deville (Sr Crown #959)*
1984 Oldsmobile Delta 88 Majestic Brgham Coupe (OCA 1st)
1992 Oldsmobile 98
1996 Oldsmobile 98

A local charity car prove I go to that draws 50-75 cars has judging.

They get local businesses to sponsor a bays.  Then people from the hosting car lodge get around and pick out cars worthy of recognition.   Cars owned by club members are normally "Display only" so it doesn't look like they are voting for themselves.

I recollect this is improve than giving every attendee a vote as information technology just becomes a popularity contest and they vote for their friends.

The only attendee votes should get for a "All-time of Show" accolade.   This way when that six figure restoration Packard or Pierce Arrow arrives out of nowhere the other car owners with their prowl night cars aren't surprised.

All skillful, spot on comments. I of the posts mentioned to "salve yourself the grief" and allow the spectators cull. That sounds like mayhap the best programme. Upwardly hither they are sometimes chosen the "People's Option Award". Hagerty really has a absurd drinking glass (or high quality plastic?) bays that they may be able to provide when they are involved as a sponsor. It isn't cheap looking like well-nigh motorcar evidence trophies. Anyway, letting the spectators choose not just involves them but it also keeps things simple and I think permits all to savour themselves. You must accept fun at these events, first and foremost. I was at a small town auto show this summer where each car had a sign with one of those QR codes (foursquare modern bar code things phones tin can scan).   I didn't exercise it myself but was told that spectators would just scan that code and at that place was then a story virtually the auto (sometimes same story as on the sign) and you  then voted 0-10 points based on the story.  There were real classic show cars next to what almost would consider past their prime number daily drivers.   Apparently some of the daily driver types had really good stories and got a lot of points.   I think the thought was so the kid with kickoff task and 97 Saturn could compete with the retired early on person with a lot more resources.

I don't know all the details on how the QR affair works.  I did ask if you need a special app or to be part of a special group, apparently in that location is an app but information technology works on any and all of those type of codes.   I am told that basically it just takes you lot straight to a website sort of matter and from there its how you design the site if yous need to be a member or annihilation like that .  No idea what information technology cost to set that up but information technology seemed to piece of work well.  I have seen the same kind of thing at  schoolhouse science fair sorts of things too then apparently its a real affair.

You are not likely to give expensive trophies. In fact, maybe fancy certificates would be advisable.

I think you want the people who have gone to the try to bring cars to go away happy. Lot'southward of trophies/certificates, attaboys, cans of car polish, whatever. Then, lots of categories:

Most popular machine
Oldest machine
Car driven the furthest
Car driven the to the lowest degree distance (simply not traillerd in)
Car restored by possessor
Most original automobile
Best modified car
Car with the nearly interesting history
Car that the mayor would near similar to be seen in
Motorcar that the mayor would least likely to be seen in
.
.
.
Automobile that most resembles a junk pile
Machine I wish my mother in law drove (open to your own interpretation).

Any. Small town meets are to exist fun - for people bringing cars, for people organizing the run across, for people coming to see the cars.

Some adept advice to consider in the above mail service.

I attended a show a few years back, where my brother in police force won best unfinished. At the awards ceremony, they acknowledged his accomplishment and his name, then announced that his trophy was non finished either. ;D

I similar that.;D

Information technology has been mentioned that in "peoples choice" awards.... someone just brings all their friends who vote for them and make them a winner. I supposed that has happened.  But I attended a peoples option auto show this summer.  Maybe a hundred cars at that place.

Our car won the plastic beginning place trophy(pre-1950) and I didn't know a soul there, other than my married woman.   Also was awarded showtime place at two judged shows this summer.  And then...who knows.

No you mixed up my points.    I was trying to say that public voting merely works in a single "Peoples choice" award.

It is when you take individual categories where a grouping of friends tin can stack the vote for a friends car.

How did it go?

I like the peer judging by people who brought bear witness cars (1 vote per bear witness car) and no voting for your ain car idea best, considering getting the oversupply to vote and counting them can be difficult.  Plus people who bring cars sympathize better to get votes in on time.  The other matter is the red convertible will usually win with crowds.

Definitely back up the keep it easy and uncomplicated concept.

I like the peer judging by people who brought show cars (one vote per evidence machine) and no voting for your ain motorcar idea best, because getting the crowd to vote and counting them tin be difficult.

I hold with Scot that judging by folks who entered a machine is a good thought. I've participated in a local testify that has been quite successful, growing to over 300 cars. It draws a lot of new cars, "tuners", and heavily modified cars. So the older cars that are near original tend to fall off the edge of the map.

How about a category of best original restoration over 25 years former, and a category of all-time preservation (unrestored original) over 25 years former? The voting could be by those entering cars that are over 25 years old. The ballots could be a unlike color, and distributed with the windshield registration bill of fare. I capeesh that these ideas add some complexity, but for some shows they may exist achievable, and they practise back up a side of the hobby that is increasingly ignored at many local shows. To simplify, the voting could instead exist done by ALL who have entered a car of whatever year in the show.
